I recently heard a middle-aged couple talk about what giving to God’s work meant to them. In the early years of their marriage, the husband was completing his graduate degree while the wife was pregnant with their first child and working to support the family. Tragically, she miscarried. She had to undergo surgery and take six weeks off work. Having only $10.00 in the bank, the young couple still wrote a check for their tithe and gave it to their pastor.

The pastor tried to give the check back, telling them that God knew they needed the money. However, the couple insisted on giving the check. God ultimately brought the couple through their difficulties and gave them a powerful testimony of involvement in God’s work.

Our own needs can sometimes make us hesitant to give to God’s work. In difficult circumstances, we may not have much money and thus feel we have nothing to give. Yet just as most of us freely and wholeheartedly give to children, parents, and other family members, so we also are to give freely and wholeheartedly to God’s work with our finances, talents, prayers, and time.
