When Life Is Unfair

BIBLICAL TRUTH: Christians can be faithful to God when they face unfair experiences.-
Commentary by Darryl Wood, Pastor of Vincent First Baptist Church, Vincent, Alabama.

 Darin and Grace shocked their Sunday School class when they announced they were moving to a distant part of the county. They would have to find a new church home because of the long drive. Darin explained that a highway expansion would claim their present house. Although they found a nicer house in another community, they struggled with leaving their church and neighbors.

 “It seems so unfair,” Grace stated with some anguish. “We don’t really want to move.” However, the state had exerted its right to claim the property and to compensate the family. Although Darin and Grace could not change the circumstance, they could decide how to respond to it.

 What other unfair situations might adults experience? In what ways should they respond?

 No one seeks out unfair treatment. All adults, however, can recall instances of unfair dealings. You may deem a natural disaster such as a tornado unfair if it flattens one house and leaves another down the street unscathed. No one can be blamed for that. Someone may run a stop sign and hit your car. The inattentive driver can be blamed, but that does not change how unfair it is that you sustained damage.

 We cannot avoid all unfairness in life. Study of this lesson will not eliminate it. The lesson, however, does reveal how Jesus remained faithful to God when He received unfair treatment. This should assist believers in knowing how to stand faithfully when unfairness strikes.
