Lesson Passage: Psalm 119:1-16
BIBLICAL TRUTH - The Bible is God’s Word and is to be treasured, studied, and obeyed. - Commentary by Bryan Beyer, Professor of Old Testament at Columbia International University and School of Missions in Columbia, SC.
Many churches I know have a Bible Drill program for children. The program strives to help children in grades 4-6 do the following:
(1) increase their Bible knowledge;
(2) develop skills in locating Bible books and key passages;
(3) memorize the names of the Bible’s 66 books in order plus selected Bible verses and passages; and
(4) learn how to apply the Bible to their lives.
Many children in our church have advanced to the statewide level of Bible Drill competition. I’m proud of their accomplishments! At the same time, sometimes I wish we had a Bible Drill program for adults so they would know their Bibles like these children do.
Americans revere the Bible. Southern Baptists, in particular, regard the Bible with great seriousness. But by and large, we don’t read it. Because we neither read nor seriously study it, we have become a nation, and a denomination, of people who know little of what the Bible actually says. Research studies have confirmed this trend. Because the Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God, we must do more than revere it; we must recognize and profit from its value.
What does the Bible mean to you?
