Both of my teenage sons share certain characteristics with me, though not always the same ones. Both of my sons are tall as I am, but neither one has green eyes (theirs are blue). Both have deep voices as I do; one is an introvert as I am, the other is an extrovert. Neither one has followed me in having a love for reading, at least not yet. They both take after me in academics and athletics. Because of these shared similarities—and in spite of the differences—it is not difficult for people to identify them as mine. Frankly, for better or worse, they look and act like their dad.

How might someone who knows your parents and you complete these phrases: You have your father’s _______________; you have your mother’s _______________.

The Son of God looks like His Father, but this is not because of any inherited attributes or characteristics. It is because He fully shares in the eternal existence and divine attributes of His Father. This is why Jesus, the Son of God incarnate, could say, “The Father and I are one” (John 10:30). In our focal verses for today we examine a critical passage from Colossians that provides us with insights about Jesus Christ, God’s Son, as eternal Creator, Head of the church, and Savior and Lord.
