Spiritual Preparation Through Personal Bible Study

Derek didn’t give much consideration to God’s value of human life until he finished college. He majored in management and especially enjoyed the courses on organizational behavior. Understanding how to manage people so they could perform well at their jobs appealed to him. Once he graduated, Derek looked forward to putting into practice some of the ideas he learned from his courses.

Not long after he finished college, grief struck Derek and his family. His grandfather, a Christian whom everyone loved, died in his sleep. Shortly after his grandfather’s death, however, joy filled the hearts of Derek’s family when his older sister gave birth, the first grandchild in the family. Within a few months, Derek had witnessed both the end of one person’s life and the birth of another.

Those two experiences influenced Derek spiritually when he took his first job at a bank’s human resources office. His coworkers really mattered to him, but not just because they worked at the bank alongside him. They mattered to Derek because he now appreciated human life more than ever before and wanted to respect every person he worked with at the office.

The story of Cain and Abel also reminds us that human life matters to God. Studying it will help you decide on ways you can demonstrate fresh respect for all people.
