SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON: JAN 11TH

Bible Passage:

Psalm 42:1–43:5

Spiritual Preparation Through Personal Bible Study

Ted and Stephanie were at the point of giving up on themselves and God. Although they once considered themselves to be mature Christians, they began to have second thoughts after a series of devastating events turned their lives upside down. First, a freak accident caused a fire in their home. Almost in an instant, they found themselves standing in disbelief across the street from their house, watching it go down in flames.

As they tried to work through the recovery of their lives and their home, they faced another catastrophe. Late one night, Ted got a phone call, the kind any parent dreads. The police officer on the other end of the line had bad news. Ted and Stephanie’s son was killed in an automobile accident.

These losses rocked their faith. Over time, Ted and Stephanie began to show signs of complete hopelessness. Somewhere along the way, they wondered about God. In time, they could hardly pray. When they brushed the tears from their eyes to talk to God, they kept asking the same question: Why? Their confusion over God’s silence in the midst of their hurt and loss only added to their worsening sense of hopelessness.

For Ted and Stephanie, as well as other believers overwhelmed by difficult circumstances, Psalms 42 and 43 offer life-changing insights that will nurture fresh hope. These two psalms are the Bible passages for this session. They address a common theme, and they share a common refrain. Thus they are linked together in this lesson.

How This Lesson Can Impact Your Life:

By studying these two psalms, you can identify with those who feel overwhelmed by their circumstances. You can discover for yourself in God’s presence, love, and direction a fresh hope for living joyfully.

See you on Sunday.
