SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON - DEC 21St

Kaitlin signed up to go to Guatemala on the missions trip because her youth leader encouraged her to go. Actually, she didn’t have much interest in the missions trip. Most of her attention was focused on graduating soon from high school and going to college.

Kaitlin’s attention turned to missions quickly once she got into her work with the Guatemalan people. Every day she helped with Bible schools, and she also gave the medical and dental specialists a hand when she had spare time. Soon Kaitlin noticed the difference the good news of Jesus made in the lives of the people there. One by one, they reflected heartfelt joy after they received Christ into their lives.

Kaitlin called home one night and told her parents the trip had changed her life. For her, the gospel of Jesus Christ had always been important. In Guatemala, however, she saw just how powerful the message of Christ was for people once they heard it. This session is about Christians such as Kaitlin praising God for the opportunity to share the good news of Christ with all people.

Jesus Is the Message (Luke 2:8-12)

8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 This will be the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.”

The message at the core of missions is about salvation through Jesus Christ. It’s a message about what Jesus did to provide God’s gift of salvation to people everywhere. Christians affirm that the news we share isn’t merely beliefs and practices associated with certain religious perspectives. Quite the contrary, the message we broadcast centers exclusively in the Person of Jesus, God’s Son and our Savior. The proclamation of His life, death, and resurrection is our message. For that reason, Jesus’ birth has particular significance for believers who have a heart for missions.
