Many people have the idea that to go to heaven they must possess certain moral qualifications or do certain deeds that make them worthy. Such people think they can earn a place in heaven. On the other hand, some people conclude they are disqualified for heaven because of some personal characteristic, habit, or experience. Even some Christians feel confused about who will be in heaven and why.
What would your answer be if someone asked you how people can go to heaven when their earthly lives are over? What about the members of your family? How would they answer?
Many people whom Jesus encountered during the last week before His death had the same problem most people have today. They believed they could be good enough to deserve heaven. This was especially true of the religious leaders in Israel, as well as others, who tried to do right things. Feeling they deserved heaven, these people looked down on those they considered sinners, outcasts, and irreligious riff-raff. Jesus had some of His strongest words for those religious leaders and their misguided followers. This Sunday, we’ll find out what He said.
