BIBLICAL TRUTH - Believers can overcome discouragement in serving the Lord by taking their complaints and questions to the Lord in prayer.


Introduction - by Dr. E. LeBron Matthews, pastor of Eastern Heights Baptist Church in Columbus, GA.Jon and Sue were excited about their church life. They increasingly took on more kinds of responsibilities. Initially they volunteered for tasks they were well-equipped to perform. Soon, however, they overextended themselves in their enthusiasm to be actively involved. In addition, sometimes other church members’ exhibited halting responses to their leadership. Jon and Sue began to get discouraged. As their disappointment mounted, they sought scapegoats and blamed lackluster ministry results on others. They consistently asked God for their work to be successful. However, they never talked to the Lord about their discouragement. Instead, they eventually joined another church and repeated the cycle.
 When you are confronted with similar disappointment in serving the Lord, how do you respond?
Many Christians think they must put on a front when they come to church or relate to other believers, especially those they view as super-spiritual. While they might be discouraged, hurting inside, and even honestly wondering about the reality of God and their faith, they would never express those thoughts to the Lord, much less reveal them to their fellow believers. The Lord wants His people to bring their honest doubts and complaints to Him and in the process experience His strength to help them persevere in serving Him.
