Today we regularly hear of politicians or businesses caught in a “cover-up” of some wrongdoing. The media reports evidence of a suspected crime or indiscretion, and the accused immediately rushes to deny the allegations as preposterous and unfounded.
Meanwhile, the story refuses to go away; and as more and more evidence appears the guilty party eventually admits the mistake. Often people will attempt to blame others at least partly as they confess their involvement.
Ironically, sometimes the attempted cover-up brings more scandal than the original misdeed. In the end the consequences become much worse than if the guilty ones merely had confessed.
Indeed, our tendency is to try to cover up our failures or to blame someone else when we get caught. How are we to deal with the sins in our lives?
